Questions for "Effects of Consumerism"

1. How would governments or people learn to change the unhealthy consumer habits and production processes of wealthy nations.

2. Because created demand is such a large part of the issue, are advertisements ethical? If not, should they be regulated or banned in any way?

Artist Statement

Human emotion and thought are the roots that allow the human experience to grow into something powerful and unique. I am interested in this interaction of human thought and the physical world; in other words, I examine how our philosophy can create direct changes in the world that powers our senses. A great deal of this is rooted in science; we explain the unexplained with unique concepts such as time and space that may never exist in any other expanse of the universe.  In fact, most concepts taught in school are metaphysical ways in which we understand and manipulate the physical. As time passes, more and more thoughts are constructed into physical reality, creating a power but also a dissonance. I examine the awe, wonder and beauty of this power of thought as well as the flaws in creating reality from brain waves.

Caitlin Pupich DM 350 Gallery Paper Gallery Paper: All the Submarines of the United States by Chris Burden I looked at the work of Chris Burden in his piece titled All the Submarines of the United States of America. This piece was meant to look at the power of the United States that many of us are not even aware of. While  most of us are taught in school that the United States has one of the largest militaries in the world, the scale of what that actually means is often misunderstood or unnoticed. This work creates a physical representation of that by forming identical cardboard replicas for every submarine that the United States had from the late 1980’s, since the work was created in 1987, and suspending them from the ceiling so that they float similarly to a real submarine .  This ends up creating a cloud of 625 submarines.  Furthermore, the name of each United States submarine can be found in a list on the wall next to the submarines.
