40 Years in the Future Proposal

My scene will take place in a small apartment with technology that is similar but more advanced than what we have today. The character will be sitting at a small desk. On the desk there is a small screen with words, but there does not seem to be keyboard; it is controlled entirely by voice. In one hand she holds a pen that she is presumably using on the pad of paper in front of the worn screen that sits on the desk. Her other arm dangles down. It has a metallic bar running down from her shoulder to her hand where it stretches out to each of her fingers. On her wall there will be various pieces of art and references to pop culture in this time or in the she grew up. I will also play with colors that fit the theme of this time.
Her apartment is small. It has a bed in the front, right corner. About a foot away is a table with a small bottle on it.  There are papers, like the ones on her pad that she is writing on.  They have words and drawings that you can guess are her own. You notice in the very back corner a small, stationary robot.  Then you see a window. Outside it is dark, the streets riddled with the bright lights of the crowded buildings. But then you look closer at the buildings; they are spectacular, their architecture nothing like you have ever seen before! They bend and twist in magical ways. Ads have been banned from society; instead art and  graffiti, which is no longer illegal, paint the streets with vibrant colors. This world is a world that values creativity and art over science and engineering; it is run by the creative minds, and there are so many creative minds.
There are few companies that work in technology and science, and most who do have a monopoly in their category. Amelia, the robot in the corner, has become a standard. This robot is in most homes keeping the apartment tidy and clean. WalTev, the television company that makes wall-sized televisions that are as thin as paper, can be found on her far right wall. The computer company, Destiny, which was created with the mandatory merge of Microsoft and Apple, creates the only computers you can buy. The bottle on the table with a small logo that reads “Lifestyle” is how most people get their nutrition instead of meals. It has many small pills inside that contain the perfect nutritional elements for each person. Finally, the device that snakes up the arm of the character is created by Bodycon, a company that mechanically enhances the human body. Most people have at least one Bodycon product somewhere on their body.
Years ago, they had simplified the world. With so many companies competing for the best phone or the fastest computer, the world was stuck in a technological battle that was destroying the economy.  Eventually, it led to a massive economical crash that destroyed the establishments of humanity before it could even destroy the environment. From there, the world rebuilt itself with one central power for all nations.  In this world, there is a large ban on advertising and the sensationalizing of material items. One company took over most categories of technology and offered only practical needs to simplify life.
Most in this world live under a religion that plays off the idea of minimalism in the sense of the consumer . Since their lives are simplified in needs such as cleaning and food, the world focuses entirely on entertainment and creativity.  This character is a writer in the height of the what would later be known as the Imagination Revolution.

Artist Statement

Human emotion and thought are the roots that allow the human experience to grow into something powerful and unique. I am interested in this interaction of human thought and the physical world; in other words, I examine how our philosophy can create direct changes in the world that powers our senses. A great deal of this is rooted in science; we explain the unexplained with unique concepts such as time and space that may never exist in any other expanse of the universe.  In fact, most concepts taught in school are metaphysical ways in which we understand and manipulate the physical. As time passes, more and more thoughts are constructed into physical reality, creating a power but also a dissonance. I examine the awe, wonder and beauty of this power of thought as well as the flaws in creating reality from brain waves.

Caitlin Pupich DM 350 Gallery Paper Gallery Paper: All the Submarines of the United States by Chris Burden I looked at the work of Chris Burden in his piece titled All the Submarines of the United States of America. This piece was meant to look at the power of the United States that many of us are not even aware of. While  most of us are taught in school that the United States has one of the largest militaries in the world, the scale of what that actually means is often misunderstood or unnoticed. This work creates a physical representation of that by forming identical cardboard replicas for every submarine that the United States had from the late 1980’s, since the work was created in 1987, and suspending them from the ceiling so that they float similarly to a real submarine .  This ends up creating a cloud of 625 submarines.  Furthermore, the name of each United States submarine can be found in a list on the wall next to the submarines. This is an interesting...
